Healing from Trauma

“I don’t know if I’d call it TRAUMA”…

No one gets to decide if you’ve experienced trauma except for you. Whatever you do call it when you can’t find peace, it’s ruining your life.

For some people, it is their parent’s divorce that drastically changed their world.

For others, it could be a move to a new state in middle school.

A devastating job loss… or any loss of a potential future… can be traumatic.

Abuse, violence, addiction, death in the family, a devastating hurricane…

Whatever the catalyst, your ship altered its course significantly… and your journey has never been the same.

“Why can’t I just put it behind me?!”

Your brain brings it front and center at the slightest reminder: a familiar smell, an unknown adult male walks in the room, someone makes a joke in poor taste, someone else’s pain brings you back…

It somehow pushes your buttons. Your brain responds quickly, without your consent. You begin to bite your nails, yell in anger, pace…you fight for air.

Do you lash out in anger out of nowhere?

Do you have panic attacks “for no reason”?

Do you get so overloaded that you have to retreat to your room… again?

“How can I ever trust anyone?”

People can’t be trusted. You know this to be true because you’ve experienced it over and over.

Maybe you aren’t worthy of love anyway. Damaged goods. If you were worth anything, the people who are supposed to love you would have protected you.

Perhaps your brain reacts to new people – new equals danger.

Defenses go up. It’s hard to make friends when you can’t let anyone in.

But your brain reminds you in a flash – someone new hurt you. You might tell yourself that you don’t need anyone – but your heart knows you were built for a relationship. Lonely isn’t fun for your heart, but your brain is happy – it tells you you’re safer alone.

Perhaps when someone raises their voice you shut down. Loud equals bad. Defenses kick in. You isolate. You say nothing, but your body is keeping score. It logs all the evidence that proves you need protection. You do whatever you have to do to keep the yelling at bay.

Perhaps when you feel disrespected, you could punch that person through a wall. You remember being bullied, with words or with fists. Defense system engaged. Your brain all too readily recognizes attack, and the blood flows through your veins while your heart pounds… getting your body ready… You couldn’t fight back then, but you certainly can now.

You’ve been working so hard on your own, but you’re depleted.

You’re tired of being tortured by your mind, exhausted trying to stay ahead of every bad thing. You’ve done your best to avoid your triggers, but still you suffer. You’re out of resources. There is no one to turn to.

There is GOOD NEWS!

Therapy has proven successful for healing from a disruptive past. It is successful in helping people process their pain and OVERCOME it! We cannot erase our past, but we can live in a future where it does not drown us. We can be free of fear and experience FREEDOM!

Here’s how therapy can help…

By talking about your experiences, we’ll work on identifying what specifically causes your pain.

We’ll create a way to manage those thoughts and feelings specifically for your unique situation.

You will learn tools you can use to regulate all those out-of-control emotions and cope with the things you cannot change.

You’ll discover ways to identify your own needs and better communicate for the things you can control.
